A local's guide to Uckfield

What’s Uckfield like to live in and what area of Uckfield is best to look for your next home? The Dropped Pin team lives in Uckfield and the surrounding villages, so we’ve put together a quick guide to each area. If you have any questions about moving to Uckfield, then give us a call. We are open 7 days a week!

Where is Uckfield?

Uckfield is a town located about halfway between Brighton and Tunbridge Wells in the South East of England. It’s a town in East Sussex and (in our opinion) a great place to live! It takes about 30 minutes to reach Brighton or Tunbridge Wells, 15 minutes to reach Lewes and around 25-30 minutes to get to Eastbourne. Uckfield train station is the start of the train line (there’s only one line) taking you to London Bridge via stops like Edenbridge and East Croydon.

What’s it like to live in Uckfield?

Uckfield has a hilly high street lined with shops, cafes and restaurants leading down to Uckfield train station. It’s a friendly community with some big events in the town’s calendar including Uckfield Carnival, a colourful procession through the high street with dancing, flaming torches, floats and music. It’s a Sussex tradition!

Other events include Weald on the Field, a free music festival on Luxford Field, and Late Night Shopping in the lead-up to Christmas, a community event where the High Street is closed off and you’ll find carol singers, dance performances, festive shop fronts and stalls.

Manor Park

Manor Park is a popular estate to live on, with a mix of Georgian terraced houses, bungalows and detached homes. It has won awards for its design, as many houses are grouped around public greens, making it feel uncramped and giving many home owners a great outlook from the front of their houses. Manor Park edges Views Wood, which leads into Buxted Park estate, so there are some stunning walks on your doorstep. There is a row of shops, including a Tesco Express, fish and chip shop and a laundrette, and the Rugby Club is located at the bottom of Nevill Road, which is often the location of fireworks displays and community concerts. Twiglets Nursery, Manor Primary School and Uckfield Community College are also on Manor Park, making it an easy walk to school if you have children. Uckfield Leisure Centre is also on Manor Park, which has an indoor pool, gym, fitness classes and 3G pitches.

Town centre

Being in the town centre puts you at the heart of the action and close to Uckfield train station, which has a direct line into London Bridge. There are a mix of flats above the shops, beautiful old houses in the high street and modern housing estates at the northern end of the town. You’ll be close to the shops, cafes, cinema and Luxford Field’s open space and playground.

Ridgewood

Ridgewood is a really popular area to live in Uckfield. The Highlands pub feels like it is the beating heart, surrounded by different housing estates, including Harlands Farm. Homes tend to be more modern at this end of town and Ridgewood gives you quicker access to the roads leading to Lewes, Brighton and Eastbourne. There is a small shop, a village Post Office and a village hall. There are a couple of small industrial areas and a few nice walks to be had around Uckfield’s Millennium Green. Ridgewood is also where you’ll find Harlands Primary School and AFC Uckfield Town.

Ringles Cross

On the northern edge of town, with easy access to the road taking you towards, Buxted or Crowborough and Tunbridge Wells, Ringles Cross centres around a local pub called The Ringles. This area has a small car sales lot, pretty cottages, and is the main exit from the High Street, so traffic can be a little busier if you’re looking at homes on the roadside. Many of the properties here are detached with long driveways. This area has some great walks, with easy access to Buxted Park and the fields taking you across to Lake Wood.

The Drive

If you are looking for a more affordable home or flat, The Drive and the roads spanning off The Drive, can give you more for your money. It’s a quick walk into the centre of town, and the estate is where you will find Uckfield Family Hub, great for young families looking for play sessions and antenatal classes.

Rocks Park

Rock’s Park estate is one of the most popular places to live in Uckfield. The area takes its name from the historic Rock’s Park Estate, which once covered much of the surrounding land. Today, you’ll find cul-de-sacs leading off a road that loops in a circle. The estate is home to a Scout Hut, Rocks Park Primary School, and it has easy access to both Luxford Field and West Park Recreation Ground. It’s around a nine-minute walk to the High Street. Rocks Park Estate in Uckfield is on the north end of the High Street, so it’s an easier walk for teens who are at Uckfield Community College, compared to the Ridgewood/New Town end of the High Street.

New Town

New Town is the southern end of the High Street. Think of it as the area between Uckfield Train Station, heading up the hill towards Ridgewood. The benefits of living in this area is you are a short walk from the train and bus station, so perfect for commuters. There are a couple of dentists, the police station and a vets, plus St Philips Catholic Primary School. Victoria Park backs onto this area of Uckfield, so perfect for families looking for a playground, tennis courts, skate park and wide open green space for playing.

West Park

West Park is a sought-after estate on the west side of Uckfield, near the main exit onto the A22 Uckfield Bypass – handy if you are commuting to Brighton, Lewes or Haywards Heath areas. It’s the housing estate on the opposite side of the road to Bellbrook Industrial Estate, and is home to some fantastic detached and semi-detached family homes. You’ll find some peaceful cul-de-sacs lined with pretty houses that feel well spaced out, some with white-picket fences and gable-fronted design. West Park also has West Park Local Nature Reserve, West Park Recreation Ground, and is an easy walk to Rocks Park Primary School. It takes around nine minutes to walk to Uckfield High Street from West Park estate.
